A teenager who already has two convictions to his name is again behind bars.
Delan Eugene was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment on Monday, May 6 2013 after pleading guilty to stealing a cell phone and cash from a woman’s car.
According to court records, Eugene was released from prison in December 2012 after serving an 18-month sentence for stealing. He had also served a six-month sentence in 2011 for the possession of dangerous weapon.
Eugene’s latest conviction stemmed from an incident which occurred on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in the parking lot of Glace Supermarket in Marisule, Gros Islet.
Reports are that the complainant, Glennel Paul, parked her vehicle, left it unlocked, and went into the supermarket. Eugene was sitting on a railing nearby.
Five minutes later, according to court records, Paul returned to find her purse, containing $500, and Blackberry cell phone missing from her car.
She spotted the defendant with the bag and immediately called the police.
Officers on mobile patrol in the vicinity of the supermarket arrived and the defendant ran. During the chase, the defendant reportedly jumped a wall but he was accosted by a group of persons. He was then apprehended by police and taken to Victoria Hospital for injuries sustained during the chase.
The cash and cell phone were recovered and returned to Paul.
Magistrate Velon John handed down the sentence in the Gros Islet court on Monday.
