The late PC Lester Remy was shot while apprehending a suspect in Ciceron in April 2008. His family is yet to receive any compensation from government.
The Police Welfare Association (PWA) has lauded the authorities for appointing a Protective Services Commission as part of the process to enforce the Protective Services Compensation Act.
The Commission is led by attorney, Hilford Deterville QC.
PWA President Martin James says the compensation act has been absent for too long in policing and must be implemented with haste.
The concerns come in the wake of an injury sustained by an officer when attempted to apprehend a mentally ill man. They were both treated at St. Jude’s Hospital.
According to James, the compensation act is desperately needed to help officers injured on the job or family members of those killed.
Noting the fatal shooting of Police Constable Lester Remy five years ago, James pointed out that the statute of limitation on compensation, as set out by the act, has expired and the family is yet to receive any money.
