St. Lucia observes Remembrance Day

Saint Lucians this past Sunday joined the rest of world to remember those who made the ultimate  sacrifice, for the peace of the world in the first and second world wars.

On Sunday, November 9, members of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force, Fire Service and Prison Service, along with the Cadet Officers participated in the annual Remembrance Day parade.

Noticeably absent this Remembrance Day were both French and English soldiers.

Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy was asked to be lead in prayer by members of the religious community and the laying of poppy wreaths at the war memorial on Derrick Walcott Square.

A platoon comprising of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force marched through the streets of Castries to the French War Memorial site in George the V Park (the gardens), where a huge double cross is erected in honor of French soldiers, called the cross of Lorraine to lay wreaths.

The governor general and the prime minister joined the St. Lucia ex-service league and the British High Commissioner Andy Price, for a short ceremony at the Commonwealth War Cemetery at the Choc Bay to lay wreaths in remembrance the members of British merchant marines who died in our waters.

Over 20 St.Lucians died in World Wars one and two.
