Biography
Filbert Salton aka KAYO aka Kayo Guevarra, was born and raised in the beautiful island of St Lucia. KAYO first fell in love with music at the age of 14. Inspired by the likes of Bob Marley, Wyclef Jean, 2Pac, and Jay-Z, Kayo, now 26, had his first gig performing a self-penned rap verse during a high school choir performance of R. Kelly’s “The World’s Greatest.”
Shows with local jazz bands followed, as did collaborations with soca and dancehall artists; although Kayo soon realized that there really was not that much room for Hip hop in the Caribbean. At age 20, he moved to Halifax, NS and attended St Mary’s University. He has since then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Commerce with a major in Marketing.
KAYO also immersed himself in the local hip-hop scene, meeting his future mentor, Classified, at several shows in the city. Their relationship was cemented after KAYO won a Classified sponsored Facebook competition.
Classified soon signed the young rapper to his Halflife Records imprint under a production deal, and then got him signed to a licensing deal with then EMI Music Canada, which was acquired by Universal Music Canada in 2012. KAYO his since been involved in the industry and the culture in a myriad of capacities.
He has released one single with EMI Music Canada, which was carried by radio stations across the country. He has released 3 full-length projects, one of which was exclusively produced by Classified. He has toured across Canada 7 times with the likes of Classified, Hedley, Karl Wolfe, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and most recently Chali 2Na of Jerassic 5.
He also operated as a Regional Marketing Representative for an independent urban clothing line from North Bay, ON called The Escape Movement and had a sponsorship deal with Appleton Estate Rum in 2012.
