Employees of the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) are currently on strike.
They are protesting against the delayed conclusion of wage talks between the NIC and the National Workers Union (NWU).
Reports are that the employees have expressed frustration over the ongoing stalemate in wage negotiations. The NWU is pressing for an increase in wages and other benefits for the employees.
St. Lucia News Online (SNO) understands that NIC employees at other locations including Rodney Bay, Soufriere and Vieux Fort have joined the protest action.
In November last year, the NWU had announced a breakdown in the talks, claiming that NIC’s Chief Negotiator Victor Poyotte walked out of a meeting.
Following that incident, an NIC delegation subsequently met with NWU on Dec. 8, 2014 to undertake a negotiating audit and to determine the way forward for negotiations.
