PRESS RELEASE - Saint Lucia has secured technical assistance from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to create a supportive policy and regulatory environment for renewable energy market development.
This is consistent with the country`s stated goal to develop 35% renewable energy capacity by the year 2020.
The technical support from UNEP is undertaken in collaboration with the work of the World Bank’s Eastern Caribbean Energy Regulatory Authority (ECERA) Project in developing a series of energy policy tools.
Under this initiative, UNEP has conducted a study examining renewable energy policy design as it relates to Saint Lucia’s specific policy objectives and national conditions.
The findings of the study will be presented at a national stakeholder workshop to be held on Thursday, February 26th, 2015, at the Palm Haven Conference Room, Rodney Bay, Gros-Islet from 9:00am – 4:00 p.m.
This Workshop will bring together a technical audience for feedback and discussions on the UNEP report in an effort to incorporate any additional recommendations.
The workshop will also present findings to date on the work of the ECERA project, including preliminary findings on the grid integration study, the grid code and the next iteration of proposed Feed In Tariffs (FIT).
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology will be facilitating the workshop which is a key step towards securing a sustainable energy future for Saint Lucia.
