Chessmoves and the Grand Masters Chess Club of St. Lucia (GMCC) will be hosting a Rapid Chess tournament this Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 10:15 a.m. at the Blue Coral Mall.
A Rapid Chess Tournament is one governed by a time limit – in this case 10 minutes – per player per game.
The GMCC is a non-profit organization that promotes chess in schools and the country. Although the club has been relatively dormant in recent times, members have been actively supporting several initiatives designed to popularize chess on the island. These include the Chess in Schools initiative sponsored by the National Community Foundation, the schools’ chess tournament which was last sponsored by East Caribbean Financial Holding Company Ltd (ECFH) and a simultaneous match display by an International Master.
GMCC members have also been training chess club facilitators in schools. The program, which began in the north, has recently been extended to the south of the island.
Registration for Saturday’s Rapid Chess Tournament is free and open to all players. Players can begin signing up at 9 a.m ahead of the competition slated for a 10:15 a.m. start in the downstairs lobby of the Blue Coral Mall.
A number of prizes and medals are up for grabs including awards for the first three places and gift vouchers from the corporate sponsors of the competition.
