Chastanet

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) says Michael Chastanet’s attempts to use his businessman title as cover to disguise his malicious attacks on the country’s prime minister were exposed by an article appearing in two of last weekend’s newspapers.

According to the SLP, an article titled “Kenny’s Cap in Hand Expedition” launching a vicious and baseless attack on Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, was published in the Voice of Saturday November 23 under the name of Michael Chastanet.

“The same article was published in the Mirror of the same date under the name of UWP General Secretary Oswald Augustin. This clearly exposes Michael Chastanet’s involvement in a coordinated UWP attack on the Labour Government, and throws egg in the face of Chastanet apologists like Jeff Fedee who argue that the SLP should not attack Chastanet because he is a businessman and not a politician.”

The SLP says it respects Michael Chastanet’s right to join his son’s politics but he and his apologists must not expect his political attacks on the leadership of the Government to go unchallenged.

“In the article claimed by both Chastanet and the UWP general secretary, a man whose historical connection with the Chastanets is well known, the prime minister is accused of using “the greater part” of Taiwanese funds for projects in his constituency.

“The SLP is asking: why is a big businessman who claims to have no political agenda participating in this calculated attempt to mislead the public? Anyone interested in the truth will find that in the two years since the Labour Government has been in office, a total of $22 million of Taiwanese funds have been allocated to community development projects throughout the country. Out of that amount Vieux Fort South has received $1.8 million.”

“The SLP reminds Mr. Michael Chastanet that up to this day the UWP administration in which Allen Chastanet was a member, is unable to account for millions of dollars which they received from the Taiwanese government between 2007 and 2011.”
