West Indies easily beat an out-of-sorts Afghanistan by 29 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis system in a low-keyed, rain-hit affair, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series here Saturday night.

In a contest reduced to 15 overs per side at Warner Park, West Indies rallied to 112 for three with Chadwick Walton top-scoring with 29, his opening partner Lewis getting 25 and Marlon Samuels, 22.

Set a revised target of 123, Afghanistan never looked the part and faded quickly without so much as a whimper to end on 93 all out with nine balls remaining.

Seamer Kesrick Williams finished with three for 11 to take Man-of-the-Match honours while captain and medium pacer Carlos Brathwaite claimed two for 26.

West Indies, who won Friday’s opener by six wickets, will now look to make a clean sweep of the series in the final match on Monday at the same venue.

Saturday’s win broke a losing slide for the reigning World champions who had lost back-to-back T20 series to Pakistan in the last 10 months.

Opting to bat first, West Indies were away to a flier as Walton and Lewis put on 42 off 27 deliveries.

The right-handed Walton faced 17 deliveries and struck four fours and one six before holing out to long-on off off-spinner Mohammad Nabi in the fifth over.

Lewis, who blasted a four and a six in a 28-ball knock, put on a further 32 for the second wicket with Samuels before he perished in the 10th over, pulling seamer Karim Janat into the deep.

West Indies had reached 79 for two after 11 overs when heavy rain caused a near two-hour break in the innings.

With just four overs left to face after a revision of overs on resumption, the hosts managed to add only 33 runs as the Afghan bowlers kept their wits about them under pressure.

Afghanistan appeared to lack a clear plan for their run chase and quickly lost Gulbadin Naib in the third over for 12, bowled by leg-spinner Samuel Badree with the score on 15.

Williams then struck twice in the following over – the first of his spell – to further set back the visitors.

First, he had opener Noor Ali Zadran caught at short fine leg by Jerome Taylor for six after being tucked up by a short ball and off the very next delivery, claimed Samiullah Shenwari without scoring to a catch at the wicket.

Tottering on 19 for three, Afghanistan continued to lose wickets steadily. Mohammad Nabi stylishly cut off-spinner Sunil Narine behind square for four in the seventh over but was then run out five balls in the same over looking for a non-existent single.

And captain Asghar Stanikzai perished two balls later in the following over from Brathwaite when he tugged a short ball to Lendl Simmons running around from mid-wicket to mid-on, after clearing the ropes at mid-wicket with the previous delivery.

Three more wickets fell for 14 runs in the space of 18 balls to leave Afghanistan in danger of their lowest-ever T20 total at 55 for eight in the 11th over.

But top-scorer Karim Janat struck a four and two sixes in a 15-ball 20, putting on 30 off 10 balls for the ninth wicket with Dawlat Zadran (9).

The charge, however, came a little too late and though the 12th over from Brathwaite leaked 18 runs, the required run rate remained onerous at 13 and in the end proved overwhelming.

COMMENTARY: After Real Madrid’s latest Champions League success, can a Premier League club conquer Europe again? It’s a tall order

The post COMMENTARY: After Real Madrid’s latest Champions League success, can a Premier League club conquer Europe again? It’s a tall order appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

Real Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy after defeating Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff to win the European Cup for a record 12th time.

Real Madrid became the first team in the Champions League era to retain the trophy after defeating Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff to win the European Cup for a record 12th time.

It is now five years and counting since an English team – Chelsea – last reached the final of the Champions League.

And next season it will be a decade since the pot was in the hands of Rio Ferdinand, Manchester United’s skipper, on that rain-sodden night in Moscow when the Red Devils defeated the Blues on penalties.

If that seems a long time ago, then, in football terms, it is.

United have fallen at the final hurdle twice since then, both times to Barcelona. But with Leicester surprisingly making it further than everyone else by reaching quarter-finals last season – it is relevant to ask when will English teams again trouble the continent’s best?

The array of managerial talent would suggest that it is only a matter of time.

Of next year’s contestants, Manchester City and Manchester United would be best-placed to put a dent in the armoury of the best.

But, even then, it looks to be a long shot.

The reason for that can be found in the pedigree of the two managers.

Out of the five Premier League bosses who will contest the competition, both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho know what it takes to win.

Arguably, given the depth of his experience, allied to the fact that he has now won both the UEFA Cup with Porto and Europa League at Old Trafford, if anyone is equipped to go deep, then it is Mourinho.

He is used to fighting on several fronts. The Portuguese has always gone resiliently at competitions. He did so at Chelsea and has continued in that vein under his new employers.

His main gripe will be the quality of players at his disposal. Much will depend on his club’s summer building programme.

It is impossible to discount Guardiola’s claims.

He wowed football with arguably the best Barcelona team of its generation. Potentially, one of the best of all-time.

And, certainly, the performance at Wembley to defeat Manchester United, six years ago, was among the most emphatic displays on the showpiece occasion.

Counting against the Spaniard is the fact that Manchester City disappointed in what was his first crack last season. He, too, needs to make a splash with his signings.

Plenty will depend, of course, on how the five entrants perform during the close season and each squad will have to add depth if a war on several fronts is to be conducted successfully.

For instance, Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice XI is a match for any. But they have a heavy workload and the hoodoo of Wembley to contend with.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool look good going forward. But can the defence, such as it is, repel Europe’s best? While champions Chelsea have carried all before them, Antonio Conte’s squad does not look the deepest, at present, and the Italian has not taken any team beyond the quarter-finals.

Of course, the age-old argument about the strength of the Premier League, relative to others, will come to the fore.

But it is a fact that several clubs are now battle-hardened and have become accustomed to reaching the knockout stages.

When the draw is made, Real Madrid and Barcelona always appear to have the teams to beat. But the core of this Juventus side, which has reached Cardiff, should be around for a few years yet.

Atletico Madrid have prospered under Diego Simeone, another who knows how to win in the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain are backed with an unlimited pot of cash and, if rumours linking them to £60million Borussia Dortmund hotshot Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are realised, they too will present a clear and present danger to the elite.

Bayern Munich are rebuilding, now that Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are growing older, but, as Arsenal routinely discover, cannot be discounted when the chips are down.

Since Ferdinand raised the most famous trophy in European football, England have been represented twice – both times by Manchester United.

And, even though we have five chances to win, it looks a tall order on current form for any of our domestic clubs to upset the form book and reign supreme once more.

Heat waves expected this rainy season, St. Lucians prepare!

The post Heat waves expected this rainy season, St. Lucians prepare! appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

heat-waveSt. Lucia and other Caribbean islands, especially those in the south, have been warned to prepare for heat waves as they will be a feature of the 2017 rainy season.

That’s according to Dr. Simon Mason of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) in his presentation “Caribbean Heat Outlooks: Research and product development” at the Caribbean Regional Climate Outlook Forum in St. Vincent and the Grenadines recently.

A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries, according to Wikipedia. While definitions vary, a heat wave is measured relative to the usual weather in the area and relative to normal temperatures for the season.

Data gathered over the years from the Caribbean islands has shown that heat waves is a growing challenge, Dr. Simon said.

He said it is time to investigate the problems of heat waves and the best way to deal with it in this region. He pointed out that in the United States heat waves kills more people than tornadoes and in 2003 it killed 30,000 in France.

Though the hurricane season has commenced in the region, the CIMH has predicted that islands in the southern Caribbean will experience less rain and hotter days.

“The projection is for as much as one third of the total days for the rainy season will be warmer than normal so the advice is for people to be ready for the heat,” he said.

Simon said that with the elderly being particular vulnerable, steps must be taken in advance to assist them to cope with the effects.

“Most parts of the Caribbean are having growing elderly, the heat waves can kill them, so understanding how to deal with this weather will be very critical in order to reduce the impact,” he said.

Besides impacting on the elderly, a heatwave could also affect productivity.

However, he noted that the CIMH is not projecting drought conditions for the region because the overall outlook is for above average rain for the entire rainy or hurricane season which officially ends on November 30.

The new viral item on social media in St. Lucia is the circulation of photos of four young males who are alleged to be robbing people in Marisule, Gros Islet.

The photos are accompanied by a message warning people to be careful and urging people to share the message, which states: “Guys pass this on please share this and Becareful.  These guys get on a bus with you from Glace Supermarket Marisule. They stop the bus by Courts Marisule and gets off with anything they can grab from your .. Phones , bags , money ..DON’T bother running after them.. there is a crew waiting for you with knives and guns!! PLEASE pass this one. You can save a life!!!”

However, based on investigations by St. Lucia News Online (SNO) the allegations may be false.

Law enforcement officials have told our newsroom that they are aware of the viral message but they’re unable to immediately authenticate the allegations.

The Gros Islet Police Station, so far, has no report that such incidents have occurred in that area, according to police.

“There is nothing like that reported to Gros Islet station. The report they have is no-where near that. Maybe a report was never made… someone is being malicious,” a law enforcement official told SNO.

Another law enforcement source said if there are indeed victims then they should report the matter to the police.

“Otherwise desist from trying to ruin people’s reputation which is also an offence,” the source added.

The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies has named the Windies 13-man squad for the upcoming One-Day Internationals against Afghanistan.

The squad includes one uncapped player in this format – Roston Chase, the 25-year-old allrounder. He made his international debut last year and has so far played 10 Test matches with 728 runs, including three centuries.

The ODI Series will be played at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia on June 9, 11 and 14. First ball in the day/night matches is 2:30pm (1:30pm Jamaica Time).

Roston Chase

Miguel Cummins

Rovman Powell

Quotes from Courtney Browne, CWI Chairman of Selectors: “On the composition of the squad: Roston Chase is the one new player in the squad. He was considered before for ODI selection, primarily because of his all-round ability. With his prolific run scoring in the last Test series and his continued steady all-round performances in the PCL we now feel it’s time to introduce him to ODI cricket. He was not among the leading runscorers in the Super50 tournament earlier this year, but we believe with his skill set and the way he has been playing he could be an asset. His outstanding efforts with the bat could not be ignored any longer coupled with his useful bowling can only add value to our squad.”

On the bowling attack: “Our bowling attack remains the same with four seamers and two specialist spinners. With Roston now adding an additional spinning option for the captain, this offers further variety to the bowling attack. This gives the team the option of playing an additional fast bowler if required.”

On conditions in St Lucia: “Over the last few years, the pitch has produced good bounce and carry for faster bowlers. If the pitches stay true to form we can expect to see that extra bit of assistance for our pace attack.”

“I never felt pain like this before”– Trouya resident bitten by centipede warns public

The post “I never felt pain like this before” – Trouya resident bitten by centipede warns public appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

The centipede (left) that bite Chad Raphael on his foot which is now swollen.

A 31-year-old resident of Trouya, Gros Islet is warning anyone bitten by a centipede to get immediate medical treatment.

That’s because the resident, Chad Raphael, was bitten by the pest on Friday, June 2, 2017, around 2 p.m.

In an invited comment, Raphael told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that his delay in getting treatment by a medical professional may have worsened his symptoms.

Raphael pointing out the bite wounds to his foot.

Raphael pointing out the bite wounds to his foot.

The self-employed man told us what happened that afternoon.

“…. While cleaning my two-bedroom apartment I went to the room which was unoccupied. While sweeping the floor I looked up and realised there was a few spider webs in the ceiling so I decided to clear it off…. I continued sweeping then I felt something bite me; looking down it was this big centipede.

“I started swinging my feet side to side and screaming. It let go after a few seconds then I hit it with the broom. It started bleeding. I then burnt the wound with rubbing alcohol, squeezing on the wound and applying hydrogen peroxide,” he said.

Raphael thought his home remedies would have rid him of the pain, but he was wrong.

“An hour later I started feeling strange… pain, pain, pain. My lips got numb and I started feeling my body getting hot and itchy. I went to bathe and applied soft candle, but the pain wouldn’t stop. It was unbelievable, then I rushed to the Gros Islet Polyclinic. They gave me two painkillers. That still did not help. I finally got to see the doctor.

“I was given three shots, one to the bum (buttocks) area and two on my hand. They said one would make me drowsy. I did fall asleep for at least two hours. When I woke up the pain had eased up a lil. I was giving a protection but most of my meds were for allergies. They said I was allergic to the toxins from the centipede,” Raphael explained.

According to Orkin, an Atlanta-based company that provides residential and commercial pest control services, centipede bites may be painful, but they are rarely fatal. The company says centipedes bite in order to defend themselves and to capture their prey.

When a centipede bites, it injects venom into victims that is stored in internal glands, the company says.

“The symptoms of centipede bites vary depending on the degree of allergic reaction and the size of the centipede. Typically, bite victims have severe pain, swelling and redness at the site of the bite, with symptoms usually lasting less than 48 hours. Symptoms for those more sensitive to the venom’s effects may also include headache, chest pain, heart tremors, nausea and vomiting,” the company further states via its website.

The larger the centipede, the greater the pain will be, the company adds.

A severe bite from a large centipede on a child, senior or person with a weakened heart can cause heart attack if untreated, which is exceptionally rare, according to Wikipedia.

Orkin says “always” contact a physician for advice and treatment of centipede bites.

Raphael, who praised the staff at the Gros Islet polyclinic, agrees: “Go to the doctor because it’s bad. Some people can be allergic to it like me. I never in my life thought a centipede would do me this…. I never felt pain like this before and the allergies…. But I’ll advise people to treat in and around their homes.”

UN Special Envoy on HIV to the Caribbean Dr. Eddie Greene speaking at the recent 10th Anniversary Media launch of Regional Testing Day in Bridgetown, Barbados.

As the Caribbean prepared to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Regional Testing Day for HIV on Friday, June 30th the need for testing was underscored against the background of worrying statistics from the United Nations.

United Nations Special Envoy on HIV to the Caribbean, Dr. Edward Greene, says findings in the 2016 UNAIDS Gap report state that HIV infections are on the rise in the region.

He said that while the major increases have occurred in Cuba and Jamaica, the greatest area of alarm is the fact that progress in stopping new infections has stalled among adults, and HIV infections are increasing among older groups.

In some countries, he says “One of my colleagues has flippantly referred to this as the ‘Viagra Effect”.

Dr. Greene, who was speaking at the recent Regional Testing Day 10th Anniversary Caribbean Launch Breakfast and Awards in Bridgetown, Barbados, lamented the fact that after ten years of decline in the prevalence rate, the Caribbean has witnessed a 9 percent overall increase in new HIV infections.

“This is shamefully second the Eastern Europe and Central Asia,” he said.

The United Nations Special Envoy on HIV to the Caribbean says that prevalence rates in the region vary from 1 point 8 percent of the population living with AIDS in Haiti, and 1 point 6 in Jamaica to approximately 1 percent, and lower in Barbados and the OECS countries.

He pointed out that less than 50 percent of the people in the region living with AIDS are receiving treatment. Cuba has the highest coverage with 67 percent and Jamaica the lowest with 32 percent coverage. It is estimated that only 2 out of every 5 persons in the region know their status.

Dr. Eddie Greene said the region is facing a conspiracy of complacency because, while there has been great success in reducing the number of HIV AIDS-related infections and deaths, as well as the increase in the numbers of persons receiving treatment, infections are increasing.

He said possible reasons for this complacency are reduced funding from donor agencies, a falloff in governmental support and a lack of adherence to treatment, which can all lead to serious reversals in the gains already made in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The post WORLD: Police arrest 12 after London attack appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

londonattacksTwelve people have been arrested after the London terror attack which left seven people dead and 48 injured.

The arrests in Barking, east London, followed a raid at a flat belonging to one of the three attackers.

A van hit pedestrians on London Bridge at 21:58 BST on Saturday. Three men then got out and stabbed people in nearby Borough Market.

The attackers were shot dead by eight officers who fired 50 bullets. A member of the public was accidentally shot.

Of the 12 people who were arrested, seven are women. A 55-year-old man was later released without charge.

Meanwhile, Canadian national Chrissy Archibald has been named by Canadian broadcaster CTV as the first victim of the attack.

A statement from her family said she “believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected”.

It said she had worked in a homeless shelter until she moved to Europe to be with her fiance.

The so-called Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said the police had reacted knowing the attackers “had to be stopped immediately”.

“The situation these officers were confronted with was critical, a matter of life and death – three armed men wearing what appeared to be suicide belts,” he said.

The vests were later found to be hoaxes.

Mr Rowley said 36 people were in hospital with a “range of injuries” and 21 were in a critical condition.

Malik Ramadhan, a doctor at the Royal London Hospital, said his team had treated one man who had been shot in the head and was expected to make a full recovery.

Both London Bridge rail and Tube stations are due to reopen on Monday from 05:00 BST but the rail station will be exit only, Network Rail said.

On Sunday, June 4, 2017, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT) proudly celebrated the start of Southwest Airlines’ daily nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale—Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) with a surprise flight gate party at the southern Florida airport, followed by continued festivities in Grand Cayman upon the inaugural flight’s arrival.

Southwest Airlines’ Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary, Mark Shaw, together with Miss Cayman Islands, Anika Conolly, kicked off the celebrations with an honorary ribbon cutting ceremony at the gate at FLL, signifying the start of the new daily flight service.

Unsuspecting travellers were showered with Cayman’s vibrant island spirit and rich local heritage as elements of the destination’s two most beloved on-island events, Pirates Week and Carnival Batabano, came to life right before their eyes with live entertainment and dancing. Rounding out the festivities were destination-inspired giveaways and refreshments for passengers to enjoy prior to the inaugural flight, including Blackbeards Rum Cakes and miniature stingray plush toys.

During the flight, guests were given the special “Caymankind” treatment as they travelled to Grand Cayman, soaking up everything from energetic Cayman Carnival dancers to enticing gifts and giveaways such as complimentary admission to various on-island attractions and even free return two-night stays.

But the revelry didn’t end there, as key Southwest Airlines executives and local island performers, along with Ms. Conolly, warmly greeted the passengers immediately after deplaning on the GCM airport tarmac. Exemplifying the destination’s unmatched hospitality, travellers were delighted as they were escorted into the Cayman Islands’ airport with a parade of excitement and high energy surrounding them, providing an unforgettable beginning to their Cayman adventure.

“We are so thrilled to welcome Southwest Airlines as our newest airline partner and introduce daily nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman, a key U.S. market for us,” said Mrs. Rosa Harris, Director of Tourism.

Education Minister Dr. Gale Rigobert

Education Minister Dr. Gale Rigobert

As Saint Lucia joins the rest of the world in recognizing World Environment Day on June 5th, I reflect on Saint Lucia’s tagline ‘Simply Beautiful’.

The United Nations has chosen to commemorate this year’s observance under the theme of “Connecting People to Nature”.  The simple and natural beauty of Saint Lucia is what has brought many visitors to our shores; it is what has made us proud as a people and it is what connects our culture, our economy and our history.

Connecting People to Nature, is quite fitting for our beautiful Helen of the West, as it brings to mind the rich biodiversity that surrounds us, and the importance of conserving and sustainably using it for the wellbeing and survival of present and future generations. As a people, we recognize the uniqueness and the value of the natural beauty of our island and its fragility.

Indeed, the three pillars of sustainable development – environmental, social and economic – require that people connect with nature, as intoned in the theme of this year’s World Environment Day. It must be noted, that giving due consideration to the three pillars of sustainable development becomes more challenging with the onslaught of climate change and the many environmental hazards that we face. Nevertheless, we are determined to rise to the challenge as a Government and people of Saint Lucia.

Today, we are being encouraged to connect to nature, but how do we really do this? How do we sustainably utilise the bounty that Mother Earth offers, while showing her our appreciation?

How do we take care of the resources with which we are blessed, so that our children and grandchildren will be able to connect to nature ten, fifteen years from now? I wish to share with you some ideas on how we can begin to connect with nature in our own little ways, and to give you a snippet of what has been taking place in this regard.

We can begin by responding to the changes around us and by paying more attention to, and being more aware of the state of our environment. Whether as Government, non-government and community based organizations, or even at the household level, we must all take responsibility and feel empowered enough to take actions that reflect our understanding of what it means to connect to nature.

The Department of Sustainable Development, through various general and community focused capacity building and awareness initiatives, has been seeking to effect positive behavioural change in our society. A public awareness initiative is now being implemented through the Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project (DVRP).

The objective of this initiative is to build awareness about climate resilience and disaster risk reduction. So far, we have reached out to various groups, such as students, Mothers’ and Fathers’ groups, sports clubs and the Church, among others.

By reaching out, we are connecting people to nature and at the same time, we are working towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal number 17, which encourages us to build partnerships.

Partnerships can begin at the small community scale, where, for example, I would like to encourage the schools, the churches and football clubs to collaborate in developing or improving the open green spaces within communities. These areas can evolve as nature parks, where persons commune in a healthy environment.

Government agencies can seek to build new partnerships with our future generation by co-opting their talents and skills in practical exercises that put them in direct touch with nature. The demarcation and cataloguing of natural assets in the Piton Management Area is an ongoing initiative that includes students from the Choiseul, Soufriere and Vieux Fort Secondary schools. This is a good example of connecting our youth to nature, while they learn about, and contribute to, its conservation.

At the regional level, we have partnered with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5 C’s) in implementing a Coastal Protection for Climate Change Adaptation Project in the Choiseul and Canaries areas.

This initiative, also supported by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, offers opportunities for developing sustainable livelihoods and builds climate change resilience within the watershed areas of these communities, while leading to ecosystem rehabilitation, employment creation and improvement in food security.   Through this initiative, the people of the community are connecting to nature, under the guidance of the Departments of Tourism and Agriculture.

One of the favourite pastimes of Saint Lucians is going to the beach. Regrettably, over the years we have observed an increase in the irresponsible disposal of garbage on our beaches. Let me, therefore, commend the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) for the tremendous job performed in cleaning up our beaches on a regular basis.

In communities such as Praslin, for example, youth groups and residents come together every so often to clean their beaches. These efforts should not, however, be construed as giving us the right to litter our beaches. I, therefore, challenge all beach loving Saint Lucians to play their part – remove your garbage from the beach, so that you will be able to continue enjoying the beach and connecting with nature.

While the focus today is on World Environment Day, I must make mention of International Biodiversity Day and World Oceans Day.

Recently concluded activities to commemorate International Biodiversity Day, which was observed on May 22nd under the theme Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism, embellished, in its own way, the theme for World Environment Day. Senior officials of government and students of various institutions were given the opportunity to truly connect with nature at some of the island’s well-known nature tourism sites.

Finally, as we observe these days dedicated to environmental concerns, I encourage you to learn about the different efforts that are aimed at Sustainable use our natural resources. Visit the Sustainable Development and Environment Division, the Forestry Department, the Fisheries Department and the Water Resources Management Agency.

Get out with your family and friends and connect with nature by exploring our nature trails; places such as the rain forest, the Pitons, the dive and snorkel sites of the Soufriere Marine Management Area and many, many more. These are all beautiful places to relax, learn and just connect with nature.

I want to further encourage you to become involved in, or initiate, community based projects that will improve your knowledge of, and appreciation for, our natural resources. By doing this, you will develop a great sense of ownership and pride for the beauty that surrounds us and on which we depend.

World Environment Day, International Biodiversity Day and World Oceans Day allow us to reflect on the various initiatives that have been undertaken to conserve our environment. However, we cannot lose sight of the fact that so much more needs to be done, and that it is incumbent on each individual to make the effort to ensure that our resources are sustainably used.

Let us all work towards protecting, conserving and connecting with nature, remembering that what is done to nature is done to us all, as it impacts our  very existence.

I thank you.

view-from-the-lighthouseDid you know the expression Vieux Fort, Old Fort, is found several times on old maps of St. Lucia?  However, the Vieux Fort “par excellence” is the one located at the southern tip of the island, just before Moul à Chique.

On the 1758 map Vieux Fort is marked across the bay between Ance Noire and Pointe Moulacique; and Riviѐre du Vieux Fort marks the river that runs into the bay.  Lefort de Latour’s map shows quartier du Vieux Fort; Grande Riviѐre du Vieux Fort; Petite Riviѐre du Vieux Fort; Baye du Vieux Fort and Anse du Vieux Fort.

From Lefort de Latour’s “Description” one learns the origin of the name in this case.  “This Quarter he says, “takes its name from a redoubt erected there by some Dutch ships to protect themselves from the attacks of the Caribs, who were angry at seeing foreigners act as if they were the masters in the midst of their very huts.”

It has been suggested that the redoubt in question might date from around 1654, when the Dutch established a colony in Tobago.  The redoubt appeared to have been on the Windward side, in the Pointe Sable district; and Amerindians relics were also found there.  The agents of the “Revolution” gave the Vieux Forts in St. Lucia the new name La Loi.

With regards to the other French Forts in St. Lucia, the 1758 map marks Ancien Fort François, old French Fort, a little inland from Islet du Choc (Choc or Rat Islet).  The headland opposite Islet à rats is shown on Lefort de Latour’s map as Pointe du Vieux Fort.  On the Admiralty map of 1888, three old forts are marked: one beneath Rachette Pt (Soufriѐre Bay); another to the South of Choiseul; and another near the mouth of the Fond D’Or River (Dennery).

Did you know the area in the heights of Vieux Fort Called Viger; pronounced Veejay may have taken its name from a French family that owned land in St. Lucia in the 18th century?  Lefort de Latour describes a property of 80 carrés in the Dennery Quarter as belonging to Heirs Vigé.  Breen list a Vigѐs as intestate succession in 1811. It may be the same name under different forms.

1 carrés = 3.2 acres

Shot of the audience

It was an evening of fine entertainment and fine company in a fine setting.

The Cabaret room onboard the Freewinds Cruise Ship which was berthed at Pointe Seraphine was packed to capacity as the Lightning Aquatics (LA) Swim Club and the St. Lucia Sickle Cell Association teamed up to host a fundraiser dubbed “An Evening of Relaxation with Friends”.

According to LA’s Club President, Mrs. Tessa Charles-Louis, “LA Swim Club is thankful to Mrs. Paula James, the recently elected Vice President of the Saint Lucia Amateur Swimming Association for making this possible.

The proceeds from the show which was our last fundraiser in May provided much needed support to 18 of our swimmers who participated in the recently held 26th Annual Aquatic Centre International swim meet in Barbados. Special thanks to the Captain and staff of Freewinds for being so benevolent and we hope that others may follow their example in providing support to various groups on island in need of assistance”.

The lineup included Deland “Deesax Natural” St. Jules, Frankie Du Boulay, Claudia Jn. Baptiste, Cleopatra Hall, Jean Mederick, Paula Calderon, and surprise guest International singer from Puerto Rico, Brenda Cifuentes. Dr. Stephen King also took to the stage to perform a thought-provoking poem.

Each act had the audience swaying and singing along to the melodic songs that were being performed. The talented Freewinds Band must be commended for not missing a single beat as they accompanied the artistes. The Master of Ceremony for the evening was none other than Radio Personality, Russel Lake.

The LA Swim club takes this opportunity to thank all patrons for attending, the performers who freely gave of their time and talent and the Freewinds Cruise Ship which has been supporting charitable causes in Saint Lucia for over 25 years.

The post REGIONAL: $350,000 bail for woman charged with importing AK47s in barrels of dog food appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

hafeisha-dillon_0In Trinidad, a 28-year-old woman charged with importing 19 illegal firearms in a shipping barrel containing dog food has been granted $350,000 in bail.

Hafeisha Dillon, a geriatric nurse from Globe Theatre Lane, San Juan, was granted bail after she appeared before Magistrate Nanette Forde-John in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court charged under the Customs Act with importing prohibited items into T&T.

Dressed in a plaid shirt, jeans and her head tied in a wrap, Dillon stood silently in the prisoner enclosure and was not called upon to plead to the charge, which was laid indictably.

Attorney Harricharan Cassie, who prosecutes on behalf of the Customs and Excise Division, did not object to bail for Dillon, but asked Forde-John to apply strict conditions to her bail considering the quantity of weapons she is alleged to have imported.

Forde-John agreed and ordered Dillon to surrender her passport and report to police three times weekly for the duration of her case.

The T&T Guardian understands that Dillon was unable to access her bail up to late yesterday and was remanded into custody.

During yesterday’s hearing, Cassie and two officers from division unpacked the plastic shipping barrel which was brought to court on a trolley to be tendered into evidence.

The barrel, bearing Dillon’s name, address and telephone number on the side, contained the illegal weapons, a large bag of dog food, two large bags of flour, two pairs of shoes and a quantity of nutritional supplement drinks.

The weapons included two AK47 assault rifles, two shotguns and 15 handguns, as well as the quantity of assorted ammunition.

Dillon, who is employed at a home for the elderly in Santa Cruz, was arrested last Wednesday as she allegedly went to clear the barrel at Piarco Air Services’ bonded warehouse in El Socorro, San Juan.

She was allegedly the second consignee to attempt to clear a barrel containing dog food that day. The other consignee was eventually arrested and his shipment seized after Dillon was detained.

The other suspect remained in police custody up to late yesterday but had not been charged. He is expected to be taken to court later this week.

Dillon was represented by Devon Williams and Kelston Pope and will reappear in court on July 3.

_96361325_bed1e122-a18f-4a7b-b9fa-08a9daf8e90eSeveral countries have cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism in the Gulf region.

Neighbours including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have closed their airspace to Qatari planes.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said he was told during his recent visit to Saudi Arabia that Qatar was funding “radical ideology”.

“During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar – look!” he tweeted.

Kuwait – one of the Gulf countries not involved in the dispute – has offered to mediate talks, and Qatar said it was receptive to dialogue.

In an interview with Qatar’s al-Jazeera network, the Qatari foreign minister said Kuwait’s emir would travel to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for talks.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told Al Jazeera that Qatar was seeking “a dialogue of openness and honesty”.

Six countries – Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Yemen, Libya’s eastern-based government and the Maldives – cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday.

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have given Qatari nationals two weeks to leave, and banned their own citizens from travelling to Qatar.

The post WORLD: New York judge arrested, led from courthouse in handcuffs appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

636322649103705412-060517astaciosmileAn embattled City Court judge was escorted Monday from judicial chambers in handcuffs.

Rochester court deputies and city police officers executed a bench warrant issued for Judge Leticia Astacio’s arrest last week after she missed a Tuesday court appearance related to an August drunken-driving conviction.

Astacio, a Rochester City Court judge, smiled and said hello to the gaggle of reporters waiting for her at the fifth floor elevator bank of the Monroe County Hall of Justice where officers marched her off to be processed at the nearby Rochester Public Safety Building. She returned later to the courthouse for an arraignment before Judge Stephen Aronson of Canandaigua City Court, who issued the warrant and is overseeing her drunken-driving case.

He ordered her held without bail in Monroe County Jail until a Thursday hearing. The reason she missed her court appearance last week was because she had been living in a temple with monks in the mountains of Thailand since May 3, she had texted to her lawyer.

“You’re doing everything to show you don’t care what happens to your public trust,” Aronson said.

In court Monday, Aronson offered Astacio a deal: Plead guilty to violating her initial drunk-driving sentence and receive 45 days in jail, two years of probation and six months on an ankle monitor. She declined and was ordered to jail.

On Feb. 13, 2016, Astacio was arrested around 8 a.m. ET on her way to City Court after New York state troopers were summoned to what appeared to be a one-car crash Interstate 490. She refused to take a Breathalyzer test

On Aug. 22, she was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge that was extended to February 2018 after she admitted violating two conditions: abstaining from alcohol and not driving under the influence.

Astacio, a Democrat who was elected to a 10-year term in 2014, also was in court in March when she beat four allegations that she violated the conditions of her sentence. One alleged that she twice drank alcohol, and three others were related to the use and maintenance of her ignition interlock device, which prevents a vehicle from starting if a driver has had too much to drink.
