United Workers Party Leader Allen Chastanet has brushed aside demands by the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) to either name the “rogue” countries which he said government has aligned with, or apologise for his comment.

Chastanet at a UWP press conference last week, said that the new leadership of his party “both in parliament and externally will restore confidence and accountability to the running of the country by working towards demanding answers and the provisions of documents on issues and relations made with rogue governments that have never been questioned by the former leader of the opposition”.

The SLP, in a statement on Monday, said Chastanet’s comment was “outrageous and offensive.” The party challenged the UWP leader to either name the countries which he described as rogues or “apologise and withdraw the statement forthwith”.

In a brief telephone interview with St. Lucia News Online, Chastanet declined to comment directly on the issue, but insisted on telling the Labour Party government to place its focus on running the country in order to improve the economy, rather than concentrating on such matters.

Chastanet in his response, went on to list a few sectors which he believes are in need of government attention, such as employment.

When asked if he would apologise for the comment Chastanet in response questioned, “when will the government stop lying to the people….?”
