The electoral department has resumed the issuance of National Identification (ID) cards.
Civic and Voter Education Officer at the Electoral Department, Alymphia Lionel, told the local media that the department has received the material to start making the new ID cards.
Lionel said the department will endeavour to serve all citizens, and provide some resolution to the ongoing backlog issue.
The elections commission official is also advising persons to retrieve their ID cards using the slips they were presented with, when applying for one. She said in cases where an individual is without the slip, the department will still offer assistance to locate their ID cards.
The electoral department was without the custom-made material that is used to make the laminated ID cards since June. During this time, more than 1,200 St. Lucians were issued with alternative “legal” letters to temporarily transact business.
The issue has caused an increase in the number of ID cards that would have to be issued.
