One hundred and twenty-four Civil Service Association (CSA) members have voted in favour of a petition against CSA President Mary Isaac, which calls for her immediate resignation.
Seven persons abstained and five persons voted against. There were 153 CSA members in attendance at today’s extra-ordinary meeting.
According to officials, they needed a two-third majority and a quorum of 75 members to have Isaac removed from the helm of the CSA.
Several members of the CSA expressed their disappointment with Isaac, saying that they supported her all along. until she chose to move into politics and accept the position of senator for the United Workers Party (UWP).
Some members however believe Isaac should remain CSA president and agreed with Isaac that the meeting is unconstitutional. They believe that the matter could be challenged in the courts.
Issac has replaced former Public Service Minister Lenard Montoute, as an opposition senator in the House of Assembly. But the petition said Isaac’s decision has “compromised the political neutrality and independence of the CSA.”
In an exclusive interview with St. Lucia News Online (SNO) after this announcement, Isaac defended her appointment, saying it is an opportunity to represent the interests of the working class. Isaac has also labeled the petition created to have her removed from the helm of the association as “politically-motivated.”
