Forty-five-year-old Nigel Thomas of Ti Morne, Union on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 pleaded guilty to grievous harm of Josiah Auguste.

The incident took place on Dec. 26, 2010 while the two men were attending a family function at Degazon, Grande Riviere.

According to the prosecutor, the sons of the two men were involved in an altercation when Auguste intervened by pushing the boys apart to end the conflict. He then left the immediate area.

In the process of separation, Auguste allegedly pushed Thomas’s son.  The two boys were 13 and 14 years old at the time of the incident.

A few minutes later, Thomas, who had been summoned by his son, demanded to know who had hit his son.  He was answered by Auguste’s son, where upon he slapped the boy and turned to leave.  Auguste took exception to this treatment of his son and followed Thomas.

The two men armed themselves with a wooden post (Thomas) and an ironing board (Auguste) and each swung toward the other.  Auguste parried the initial blow from Thomas with the ironing board and then turned to leave.  As he was leaving, he fell and lay on the ground.  Whilst on the ground, Thomas took the opportunity to deal Auguste one blow to the head with the wooden post and left him there.

Auguste proceeded to Victoria Hospital where he was treated and discharged.  He then made a report to the Criminal Investigations Department.

Upon arraignment in the High Court on Wednesday, Thomas pleaded guilty to the charge of grievous harm.  A pre-sentence report was ordered and Thomas will return to court for his sentencing hearing on May 22, 2013.
